White Oak (Quercus alba)

There are few trees that merit the words majestic, grandiose, and stately. When you see an old white oak, it evokes an emotional response of wonder at God’s great creation with its arms appearing to reach toward heaven. This giant can reach heights of up to 130 feet and 3 feet in diameter. Its beauty is matched by its resourcefulness. The acorns, leaves, twigs, and even bark are eaten by a myriad of wildlife. New growth shoots are a spring favorite of white-tail deer and eastern cottontail rabbits. White oak acorns have a lower tannin content than other acorns, making them a choice food for birds and mammals. In the fall, turkey, blue jay, crow, northern bobwhite, mallard, and ruffed grouse feast on them. Acorns are also preferred by black bear, white-tailed deer, white footed mouse, squirrel, and cottontail rabbits. Their leaves support more caterpillars than any other native tree. The bark is eaten by porcupines and beavers.
Its importance does not end when the tree dies. The white oak is one of our most important hardwoods. The wood is used in our homes for hardwood floors, wall paneling, and timber frame structures. It is shaped into furniture, bowls, and split into strips for woven baskets. It is one of the best woods for steam bending, making them important for making Windsor chairs which many of us use for dining chairs. It is the principal tree used to make wood barrels. It also makes a hot and long burning firewood. The white oak is truly a treasure.

White Oak (Quercus alba)

A short poem I wrote to describe the benefits of this important native tree. It supports more wildlife than any other native plant.

The Old Oak Tree
The deer forages acorns beneath its feet and never wonders when will I eat.
It knows the oak’s bountiful crop will sustain its life and never stop.
If the tree may fall from the hand of God or man, the oak’s legacy forever stands.
In the seedlings that grew beneath its limbs. The crop will forever remain. Giving life again and again.
